Between 1791 and 1917 there existed in eastern Poland and western Russia a vast area known as the Pale of Settlement, created by Catherine the Great in an attempt to squeeze Jews out of her Empire. While financial poverty dominated, musical life was maintained and even blossomed. This concert, given by artists of the National Opera Studio, will shine a light on this little-known yet rich heritage of Yiddish art song.
